Guardian's world timeline

Shen Wei's personal history

Quick world synopsis from the wiki:

Guardian is set on the Earth-like planet of Haixing, populated by a native human population and two alien races — the Yashou, who are able to shapeshift into plants and animals, and the Dixing, superpowered beings who live deep underground. The three races have enjoyed a peaceful co-existence since the arrival of the Yashou and Dixing over ten thousand years ago, broken only by an ancient war declared by the Dixing after a meteor strike depleted their resources. During that war, the Haixing and Yashou were led by the hero Kunlun, who became a close comrade to the Black Robe Envoy, the leader of a faction within the Dixing that sought peace. The war was won by the Haixing with the use of four holy tools crafted from the meteor. At the end of the war, Kunlun vanished, and the Black Robe Envoy became the overseer of peace between the races while awaiting Kunlun's return.

In the present, conflict has begun to erupt again between the Dixing and the surface-dwelling races. The hotheaded Zhao Yunlan leads the Special Investigation Department (SID), a group that works with the Black Robe Envoy to uphold peace and investigate cases related to the Dixing people. While investigating an incident at the local university, Zhao is assisted by Shen Wei, a biological engineering professor. The two men are drawn closer together as a mysterious enemy threatens to re-ignite war.

God Houses:

  • Heimdall: This is the house Shen Wei would be immediately drawn to. He's a warrior and a protector, he is willing to sacrifice his happiness and even his life for the greater good, and he doesn't believe there's value in his own life if he can't use it to help others. He's accustomed to fighting and the austere life that comes with it, he's disciplined and well suited to life in a military house.

  • Odin: Shen Wei is an intellectual as much as he is a warrior. He's a brilliant biological engineer, loves study and learning, and is a meticulous planner. He never does things on a whim, only after careful reflection on every possible angle.

  • Njord: While he has good intentions, Shen Wei is a big ol' liar. He's extremely secretive, both to protect himself, and also to protect the double identities he must use in life. He never gives away what he is thinking, coming off as either stoic or shy, and though the latter is closer to the truth, Shen Wei simply doesn't like to share too much about himself with others.

Personality: Shen Wei has lived a very long life, and the fullest part of it was spent as two people, Shen Wei the professor, and the Black Robe Envoy, Enforcer of the Underworld.

He is as fierce a warrior as can be found, but all the violence in him has been born of necessity. Shen Wei is a pragmatist, and often the only one standing between humans and the underworlders and the destruction of their fragile peace. If he has to be violent for the greater good, he doesn't hesitate, but Shen Wei has never enjoyed it. When he first dons his signature mask, it's not to hide his identity, but to hide the fear in his eyes when he fights. And he fights at great speed, so that his enemies don't have time to see his hands shaking. He controls his image as the Black Robe Envoy carefully, for as long as he's an entity that commands fear and respect, he can continue to protect the two worlds he walks between.

If war had never come to him, Shen Wei would be a gentle man, and he still is when afforded the luxury. In the above ground Dragon City where the humans dwell, Shen Wei lives a quiet life as a university professor of biological engineering. He takes a personal interest in his students, watchful for signs that they are overworking themselves or otherwise failing to thrive, and bringing them food when they are ill or in the hospital. He's calm and kind, often sought out by colleagues to work with, but even though he's well regarded by all, his quiet nature means he has few friends. He'd like to, but Shen Wei has trouble interacting with more vibrant personalities. He's often bowled over by them, agitated to the point that he will simply leave. He can't tolerate alcohol and eats unindulgent, healthy foods. He wears glasses that he doesn't need, doesn't own a television, and has so many books he often donates them. In sum, he's a big ol' nerd.

If Shen Wei is quiet, the Black Robe Envoy is nearly silent, speaking only as many words as is needed, and remaining in anyone's presence only as long as is necessary. He is seemingly without emotion, committed to rules and order above all, but this is all a role Shen Wei has forced himself to play. He has supreme control over himself, but there are things that can make that resolve crumble. One of those things is his own compassion in the face of injustice. Though he's sworn to capture and return every escaped Undergrounder to the Underworld, Shen Wei listens to their story and excuses, often lying about their crimes to lessen their sentences, or even quietly letting them go if he believes they'll do no further harm.

The other thing that can crack through Shen Wei's impressive personal control is Zhao Yunlan, his love of 10,000 years. In all his long life, Shen Wei has only been able to share one year of it with Yunlan, but it is better than all the years that came before. Only Yunlan can make Shen Wei truly laugh, and though he can't tolerate antics from anyone else, when Yunlan acts out as his perpetually ridiculous self, Shen Wei only adores him more for his free spirit. They met when Shen Wei was only a youth, but he never forgot Yunlan, carrying his token in a locket for ten thousand years until they came face to face once again. From that moment on, protecting Yunlan was as important to Shen Wei as protecting their two worlds, and everything he did after was to keep him safe. Ultimately, Shen Wei succeeds in his goal, but only by sacrificing himself, which he does willingly. His only hope is that if Zhao Yunlan found his way back to him in one life, perhaps he will again in another.

Shen Wei does have family, but their relationship is complicated. When they were children, he and his brother Ye Zun were all each other had, and Shen Wei fiercely protected him despite being only a boy himself. Due to a misunderstanding when they are still children, he and his brother are separated, and Ye Zun manipulated into hating Shen Wei and blaming him for his difficult life. Ye Zun becomes the chief villain of their world, at odds with everything Shen Wei believes in and strives to uphold, but even in their darkest moments, part of Shen Wei has always wondered how this could be the sweet Ye Zun of their youth. It's Ye Zun's hand that kills him, but Shen Wei's last thoughts of his brother aren't of hatred, but of love. Even after ten thousand years, Shen Wei still hopes to repair their relationship, even if it must happen in another life.
